Story

Gwent Wildlife Trust has a once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase Bridewell Common, which is linked to Magor Marsh Nature Reserve. Help support us protect these 81.45 acres of ancient marshland on the wildlife rich Gwent Levels.

Help us raise the funds needed to purchase the land and transform it into a nature reserve. Time is running out, so we are challenging staff, volunteers and other supporters to raise the rest of the money by joining in with the Bridewell Reen-lay.

The Gwent Levels has an abundance of wildlife, thanks in part to a network of water ditches known locally as reens that stretch from Cardiff to Chepstow. These reens give the Gwent Levels its unique character and are home to a rich diversity of wildlife including birds such as little egret and reed bunting, mammals like otter and water vole plus a variety of insects and plant life from water beetles to yellow flag iris. Not to mention the effectiveness of the marshy meadows as a carbon store in the defence against climate change.

The reen network is equal to 900 miles of waterways so we are asking you to contribute as many miles as you can to our version of a relay race, the Bridewell Reen-lay. Think about how much you can achieve and complete a sponsored run, walk or cycle and raise money for the distance you travel. If everyone joins in we can complete 900 miles! If you don't want to walk, run or cycle why not swim, abseil or canoe - be creative.
