Story

Donate now and help save lives.

As we live through these unprecedented times we are all feeling the pressure, both mentally and financially. As a charity you have helped build and nurture for over 31 years, we have lost the ability to generate many income streams overnight - for example, our challenge events and our wonderful support from family income. Across the board, we are anticipating the loss of around £300,000 in the next few months - this is a significant portion of our yearly income.

A significant reduction in donations will have a profound impact on our ability to continue supporting the Leeds Congenital Heart Unit (LCHU), patients born with heart defects and their families. We are launching this urgent appeal to maintain our mission to save critically ill patients and support hearts for life during this incredibly difficult period.

During this difficult time, the hospital must still perform emergency heart surgery on babies and children. The LCHU usually treats 22,000 congenital heart disease outpatients every year.

Your donations will provide vital support to staff during this busy time; paying for care packages for clinical workers unable to get essential supplies.

As you know, NHS workers are tireless frontline soldiers in the war against coronavirus, and those within the LCHU are no different. Please help us to help them.

How your donation could make a difference...

£300 could pay for an INR home testing kit for a patient, so they can test their blood levels while self-isolating and at a time when hospital appointments are especially difficult.

£150 could buy support packages for the cardiac ward staff including everyday essentials, snacks and treats.

£80 could pay for an AliveCor device which allows patients to monitor their ECG at home while they are social distancing.

£30 could pay for family accommodation for one night while a young family member recovers from an urgent heart procedure.

£10 could provide daily support for a family while a patient is on the heart ward. Each family will be automatically entitled to £70 per week support during this challenging and emotional time.

Your donations are absolutely vital at this time so we can ensure the LCHU are provided with the equipment and support they need to deliver the service and save young lives. You can ensure families receive the practical and financial support they need in this difficult climate, such as accommodation at or near the hospital, travel and living expenses, and emergency grants for exceptional circumstances.

Stay safe, be kind and we will get through this together. Best wishes from our hearts to yours,

Sharon Milner (CEO) and the CHSF Team
