FGM is practiced by about 68% of the Maasai families in Narok South and Narok North district. The World Health Organization has established that FGM is the leading cause for difficulties and complications that often lead to the death of women during childbirth. Despite this revelation, many girls are currently still being forced into FGM. Similarly, the girls in Maasailand are being forced into early marriages to men that they do not know, and who are often much older than they are. These marriages are mostly planned and enforced by parents. This situation not only forces the girls into a life of sadness, but also exposes them to several health risks, such as, HIV and STIs. The related health risks are commonly caused by lack of proper HIV/STI testing and counselling, and the transfer of similar diseases from polygamous practices.
Over the past twenty-seven years, Mission With A Vision (MWV) has helped nearly 1,300 Maasai girls seeking to escape female genital mutilation and early marriage. Working with few resources, but with an unreserved commitment to the well-being of children, the Mission’s staff works tirelessly, frequently at great personal risk, to safeguard and educate local children. The organisation also provides these young women with a safe house, educational scholarships and vocational training.
Mission With A Vision (MWV) also works with community elders to help the girls reconcile with their families, a delicate task that frequently requires months of negotiation and counselling. They currently support the education of more than 128 girls and 3 boys in an effort to provide quality education.
This year we will be completing a four-year project with Mission With A Vision (MWV). Most of the work remaining is internal and we approximate the total cost to about 6000 pounds. This includes doing the ceiling, wiring of the room, doing all the tiles. plastering the walls, painting both inside and outside, fixing of lighting including putting gypsum on the stage area. We have also built a small stage where the girls can develop their talents in singing, dancing, and acting.
