India has been hit by the worst second wave of Covid - 19 in the world. At time of writing this India has so far confirmed more than 186,000 deaths and 16 million cases - three million have been added just in the last two weeks. And it continues to see record single-day spikes, evidence of a curve that is far steeper than the first wave in mid-September last year.

the health system and hospitals have been overwhelmed and are now crumbling under the pressure. There is a mass shortage of hospital beds, ICU and hospitals are running out of oxygen. Families are travelling hours and hours from hospital to hospital to have get medical treatment for their loved ones, with many not making it. People are dying at the roadside and anguished families are waiting for hours to perform last rites, mass cremations as cities run out of space to honour the dead and incessant plumes of smoke from funeral pyres.
