Story

Batley & Spen Youth Theatre Co was set up in 2017 to celebrate the life of and values of the late Jo Cox MP. Following on from the huge success of Hear the People Sing in summer 2017, the company is now staging a second project taking place over 2 weeks this August, culminating in performances at Batley Grammar School. Participants will be creating a brand new production called Deeds Not Words - A Summer of Suffragettes and Soldiers. The project will be staged by young people of all backgrounds, communities and faiths and led by a West End creative team. The production will celebrate the values Jo stood for - togetherness, collaboration, comradeship, equality; and will include a production skills training project which will see the participants work alongside top theatre designers and practitioners in an intensive process. The project has been created to celebrate togetherness, benefit the lives of the young people involved, and will continue to re-write the narrative of Batley & Spen by harnessing the extraordinary talents, positivity and energy of the young people of the area. It will provide them with access to professional theatre arts training and work experience that will be unique in the region, and indeed the nation. We need your help to make this free at the point of access from the widest possible base of social backgrounds, and to ensure that the participants' involvement is based on potential and not financial background. Please donate here, and for more information, and to sign up to receive ticketing updates, please email us at info@hearthepeoplesing.com .

About the charity

B&SYTC has been set up to celebrate the life and values of the late Jo Cox MP, and leave a legacy for young people in the town. The company is particularly interested in working with young people who have not previously engaged with the performing arts, and who do not feel theatre is for them.
