Our Communities are Starving
There is no way to talk around this- our communities are in crisis.
Where normally we would be coming to asking for ongoing support for prenatal care, well-child visits, deworming and scabies medication, dental care, etc., we need your help RIGHT NOW to fight the widespread problem of starvation within the communities we serve.
The majority of our patients live in extreme poverty- categorized at less than $2.50 per day. They have no financial reserves. Those who had work on plantations in other parts of the country and in Costa Rica are now unemployed due to COVID-19 restrictions, and any government support either hasn't reached them or simply isn't enough. Food grown within the communities, while more nutrient-dense than the rice, bean, and flour staples that make up the bulk of many diets, are simply not enough to meet the caloric needs. Our patients are eating only every few days, nursing mothers are at high risk of losing their supply, infants are at risk of wasting, and an entire generation is at high risk of lifelong chronic disease resulting from poor nutrition.
Floating Doctors, along with other organizations in the region are doing our best to deliver food throughout the region, but we need your help.
We need to provide rice, beans, flour, cooking oil, peanut butter, and canned fish. While we recognize this misses key nutrients such as those found in leafy greens, the situation is one of desperation. Our initial focus right now is on ensuring protein, fat, and calorie intake and avoiding starvation.
Your gift of $25 will feed a family of 5 for one week!
Thanks to the swift and generous response from our Floating Doctors Family, our original goal of $11,000 was reached in less than 24 hours! We've doubled our goal to $22,000 which will provide at least 880 food packages throughout our communities!
