MIOT 2020 Fundraising Projects

1. Cataract Eye Camp North East Sri Lanka: MIOT has been conducting free cataract surgery camps in the North and East of Sri Lanka for the past 18 years, with the goal of SAVING SIGHT, CHANGING LIVES, AND BUILDING A BRIGHTER AND SAFER FUTURE for the people. The cataract project has been running for over 18 years ago and to date has carried out more than 10,000 free cataract operations. Several recipients have never been able to seek medical attention and have been forced to live in darkness for years, restoring their sight is the most heart-warming gift for us to enable them to see again.

2. Female Health Care Assistant Training Programme Batticaloa: Generating healthcare jobs for young women in the Eastern Province in Batticaloa. This ongoing project trains up to 25 students annually. Students require a minimum of 5 subjects in GCSE to enter the programme. Batticaloa in the Eastern Province has been ravaged by 30 years of civil war and seen further disasters, including the 2004 Tsunami and 2019 Easter bombings. This course provides a unique opportunity for young women to both obtain employment and work in health care.

3. Moolai Hospital Regeneration: MIOT helped support a major uplift of the hospital, which was completed in January 2019. However, more work is still required in order to upgrade the inpatient wards, operating theatres and residential facility at the hospital. Moolai hospital is one of the oldest in Sri Lanka and boasts one of the oldest medical schools in South Asia. After 30 years of internal strife the hospital has been badly run down, ultimately impacting the services which it can offer. This project saves the local community a 3 hour walk to the closest hospital in Jaffna.

4. ORHAN - Organisation for the differently abled children Vavuniya: Funding a group of teachers, dedicated to supporting and improving the lives of handicapped children with everyday life skills, sign language, speech improvements, learning to play and interact, physio therapy, envelope and greeting card making, flower making, yoga, home gardening, religious and cultural activities. MIOT is dedicated to growing this project in order to admit more students and recruit more teachers.

5. Medical Student Scholarship Programme Jaffna University: MIOT has pioneered this programme since 2004, funding admissions to the medical school for underprivileged students, including those with families that live in extreme poverty. Prior to this scheme, students worked in shops, cafes and markets to supplement their meagre resources. This remarkable project has been a true journey, launched in 2004, MIOT desperately wanted to give back and support the next generation of young doctors in Sri Lanka. However, with the state of medical schools in Sri Lanka, we found that more applications were coming from remote areas and very poor family background. These prospective doctors are desperate to escape a life of poverty, having seen their family and friends die in years of war. Living away from home brings about additional challenges to students needing to pay for accommodation and food. Numerous students are forced to work at local boutiques, tea rooms and fish and vegetable markets to pay for their education. MIOT has built a rapport with the Deans office and students union at Jaffna Medical School to support these students in need of financial aid.

6. MIOT Orphanages Project - For Abandoned and Orphaned Children: Started in 2001, this project has been present in remote and rural areas across Eastern Sri Lanka. The children are admitted to these homes on the order of the courts of law to house children who are either orphaned or that have been found abandoned. The children are housed, fed and educated. MIOT supports homes in Thilagawathiyar Illam in Vaharai, Vivekananda Illam in Valaichchenai and the Hari Boys Home in Kallady. All admissions to these homes are controlled by the local courts of law and the Probation office. Children who are found abandoned or are made orphans are admitted to these homes. Whilst the children are admitted to the local state schools, the homes provide extra tuition after school in English, Maths and Science, as well as taught music and drama. MIOT has been so proud to see some children gaining entry to Universities, as well as enabling children who show promise to be sent to schools in larger cities to pursue their studies. It has been a great privilege to be able to help these children.
