Story

Our Museum Needs Your Support

Ladies and Gentlemen,

In 1913 Great Britain was preparing to meet an unprecedented threat, this was to become 'The Great War'. To meet this threat and with great foresight Montrose Air Station was formed in February 1913, making it arguably the oldest operational military air station in Great Britain.

Montrose Air Station, later becoming RAF Montrose, was actively involved in training young pilots throughout the First World War and was reactivated to train the young pilots who just a few years later were called up to fight a threat once again during the Second World War.

As a result, Montrose Air Station has a vitally important place within military aviation history.

This heritage has been preserved and promoted by a dedicated team of volunteers since 1983 and the majority of revenue required to maintain this historically irreplaceable site is generated by our wonderful visitors and groups from around the World. All of whom become our friends and in some cases aviation history family.

Our reward over the years has been that our visitor numbers have been steadily rising, allowing us to expand our site and tell more of the rich story of men and women who served at the Air Station.

Today, we are once again facing an unprecedented threat, in the form of COVID-19.

The current lockdown is a vital tool in combating this threat, but the consequences of having to lock our gates to visitors is having a considerable financial impact on our heritage site.

How can you help?

As our history proves, when threatened, we as friends and family pull together. To help, we are asking for your donations to allow us to preserve and maintain the museum and heritage site until we have successfully beaten this new threat.

Please be reassured that every single penny raised from your kind donations will be directly used to keep Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre maintained and our precious artifacts preserved.

Donations of any size will be gratefully received and will make a great difference to our future.

Thank you all for taking the time to read our message and may you all remain healthy and safe. We sincerely look forward to welcoming you back to our wonderful Heritage Centre when the 'All Clear' has sounded.

The motto of the Royal Air Force is very apt at this time.

Per Ardua Ad Astra (Through Adversity to the Stars)

Kind Regards

Stuart Archibald (Chairman - Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre)

About the charity

We aim to show the human side of the Air Station past through a collection of photographs and artefacts. Telling the history of the airfield and the story of all who served there and those who lived in the area. The Heritage Centre ensures that future generations will remember their service.
