Story

The Situation in India

The health infrastructure in India is 130 of a total of 169 countries in the Human Development Index. Most government hospitals serve an estimated 61,000 people in India, with one bed for every 1833 people (National Health Profile 2015). Out-of-pocket expenditure on health has risen steadily over the years, with the cost of medicines, followed by that of hospitalization accounting for the largest share of the household expenditure. Deaths from most infectious diseases have been falling steadily in India, and Non-communicable diseases are on the rise with cardiovascular diseases, accounting for a quarter of deaths from other non-communicable diseases accounting for six percent.

The government-run healthcare system in Gujarat has deteriorated to an alarming extent with up to 77% specialist doctors and 69% general doctors not available, shortage of nurses up to 72%, and paramedical staff up to 41%, shortage of beds in hospitals up to 73%. Mosali is a particularly vulnerable area in Gujarat province of India. There is a high level of poverty in the community and no hospitals in the vicinity.

How IDRF is helping

IDRF, in partnership with our local partner, will support the construction of a health care clinic in India to provide accessible quality primary health care services. The goal of the project is to reduce the gaps between existing health care services & demand and to make health care services affordable for everyone. This project will, in turn, reduce the health burden of the government & the poor patients, especially women, children & elderly people who are extensively suffering from chronic health care challenges. The project will follow the guidelines of the Medical Council of India & Gujrat state in constructing and operationalizing the hospital. A robust and modern approach to healthcare construction includes several key elements like supporting core care functions and goals, evidence-based design, a long-term plan to help facility over its lifecycle, innovation, collaboration and value engineering and sustainability.

The IDRF Mosali health clinic will provide quality health services to the community, free of charge.

This project is in Memory of Husain Bhayat, who was helping IDRF with this project just before he passed away. Dr. Cassim Degani, IDRF Advisory Council Member and our South Asia Medical Advisor, will be supervising this project
