Scan historic Malvern research site before demolition

Malvern is about to lose the remaining buildings of the research site where Radar and many subsequent scientific and technical inventions originated. To make a virtual record of it before the bulldozers move in we urgently need your donations.

Story

URGENT APPEAL TO PRESERVE MALVERN'S SCIENTIFIC HERITAGE

In 1942, at the height of World War 2, the Telecoms Research Establishment came to Malvern, initially to Malvern College. It was here that Radar was developed. In 1946 TRE moved to the site which had, during the war, been HMS Duke. In 1957 the Queen renamed it the Royal Radar Establishment. Subsequently, its name evolved to RSRE, DRA and DERA. During these years it was a world-renowned hotbed of scientific and technological invention, the home of microwave and infra-red sensors, liquid crystals for flat-screen TV displays, air traffic control, and radar weather forecasting, to name but a few.

Times have changed, and the historic buildings, now disused, are about to be demolished to make way for domestic housing and commercial premises. Attempts to get the buildings preserved have failed, but there is still a chance to make a virtual record of this once secret workplace so that the magnitude of Malverns scientific achievements is not lost to future generations.

Because the Developer has declined to fund a proposal by MRATHS for recording the Site, we are urgently seeking to raise the approximately £10,000 needed to scan and image the buildings in 3D, internally and externally.

This will come at a cost and time is of the essence. We need to raise in the region £10,000 to have the site mapped so that comprehensive video and data sets can be produced. Any surplus money donated will go to develop MRATHS archive and public events.
