Story

Cancer isnt just a critical health issue, its a human issue that touches all of us.

Love Hope Strength (LHS) was established in 2006 in the UK and USA by musicians Mike and Jules Peters to help save lives and give hope to families affected by cancer. Led by volunteers and supported by partnerships with leading international organisations, LHS helps to provide those it serves with a lifeline.

The facts:

Despite huge advances in cancer research and treatment, cancer remains the second-leading cause of death worldwide. 10 million people die from cancer every year. Millions of families are affected by cancer: there were 17 million new cases of cancer worldwide in 2018.

70% of cancer deaths occur in low-to-middle income countries, which are the most ill-equipped to cope with the cancer burden. 90% of these countries dont have access to radiotherapy, one of the essential tools to treat cancer.

Up to 3.7 million lives could be saved each year by implementing resource appropriate strategies for prevention, early detection and quality treatment.

At least one third of common cancers are preventable. Over a third of all cancers can be prevented by reducing exposure to risk factors such as tobacco, obesity, physical inactivity, infections, alcohol, environmental pollution, occupational carcinogens and radiation.

The Love Hope Strength (LHS) co-founders and many of those involved in the charity have their own experiences of living with a cancer diagnosis. In order to make a lasting difference for others affected by cancer, LHS has pledged to work with partner organisations that provide insight into their evidence-based research and who share their knowledge to help advance cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment and care.

The partnerships:

LHS has establish the 'Get On The List' programme in partnership with international blood cancer non-profit DKMS to help people with a blood cancer or blood disorder who need a second chance of life. To date, LHS has registered almost 250,000 people to international stem cell donor registries. Approximately 4,500 of those who've registered through the 'Get On The List programme have been identified as potentially life-saving matches. LHS continues to encourage people to Get On The List.

Through the years, LHS has equipped hospitals and community cancer services with new facilities and equipment in Africa, Asia and South America. LHS has pledged to give $50,000 over the next four years to support the Childrens Cancer Unit in the Muhimbili National Hospital in Tanzania.

LHS aims to help reduce the number of new cases of cancer by supporting prevention schemes. LHS has pledged to support the World Cancer Research Fund cancer prevention programmes with $50,000 for the next four years.

LHS also aims to help ensure people with a cancer diagnosis have the support they need when they need it most. LHS has pledged to support the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) with $50,000 over the next four years to further UICCs work with grass roots cancer organisations and hospitals across the globe.

LHS works alongside the National Health Service in the UK and Cancer Centres in the USA by providing grants to fund new equipment, better facilities and special projects to better the care and treatment that people affected by cancer receive

The need for individual action, together. We can all:

Use our voices and take action to support people affected by cancer

Take measures to reduce their own risks of cancer

Raise awareness of the importance of early detection and quality treatment

Why hike Offas Dyke?

The Love Hope Strength co-founders will walk 177 miles to raise money to benefit people with cancer from underprivileged communities and to encourage others to walk and talk and move more. The main aim of the hike is to promote the World Cancer Research Fund recommendations to reduce the risks of cancer, and to share the importance of the five ways to wellbeing.

The Love Hope Strength Foundation is a Registered 501(c)(3) in the USA, EIN 260528852. The Love Hope Strength Foundation is a Registered Charity in the UK, Registered Charity Number 1117505.
