Plastic-free Charter North Dulwich campaign; save plastic, save money, stay hydrated!

Charter School North Dulwich aims to be free of single-use plastic by 2021. Bottled water produces a lot of plastic waste. So the Friends are fundraising for new water stations and reusable bottles so that all pupils can be plastic bottle free.

Story

The Charter School North Dulwich aims to be free of single-use plastic by 2021. Already the school caterers use compostable packaging for most of the food sold. Bottled water remains the single biggest use of plastic in the school - more than 600 bottles are bought at the school every day, adding up to more than a tonne of waste every year - and the next step is to replace plastic water bottles with new water stations, reusable bottles that pupils can fill themselves and new piping for the water fountains. The Friends are campaigning to raise funds for the new water stations and reusable bottles so that all pupils can be plastic bottle free.

Some pupils buy a bottle of water every day. By using a refillable bottle, filled for free at the refill stations, they will be saving £5 a week, or £190 a year, or £1,350 over 7 years at the school.

The school would like to install 12 new water fountains and refill stations, with chiller units so they can provide fresh, chilled water to all pupils. This will cost £27k; we're fundraising to help reach this total. The more we can raise, the more funding can be used by the school to support other school improvements.

Help us save plastic, save you money and keep students hydrated. Better tasting water, more easily available around the school.

Did you know:

- Bottled water is around 1,000 times more expensive that normal tap water

- And it's much more damaging to the environment; manufacturing plastic bottles uses millions of barrels of oil and transporting bottled water produces large amounts of carbon emissions.

- Putting your plastic waste in the recycling bin doesnt guarantee that it will be recycled. Most of the UK's recycling is sent to China and other parts of Asia and recent research found that much of it may end up being dumped rather than recycled. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/jul/23/uks-plastic-waste-may-be-dumped-overseas-instead-of-recycled
