THE NATIONAL READ ALOUD CAMPAIGN 2024
Join the Adventure
Imagine 1000’s of children READING ALOUD at THE SAME TIME across UK and KENYA for a common goal.
READ ALOUD is a SHARED adventure promoting children’s literacy, a love of reading and climate change action.
On Friday, July 12th, 2024, all across Kenya, 300,000 learners from 3,000 Primary & Junior secondary schools will read aloud for climate action.
This year’s event is an attempt to break the World Record for the Most People Reading Aloud from the Same Text at the Same Time in Multiple locations.
They will be joined by 6000 Reading Ambassadors across the world.
Led and hosted by Start A Library in Kenya, it will coincide with the Inaugural Annual National Reading Day, as declared by the President, H.E. Dr William Samoei Ruto.
We want to raise our voices in Nottinghamshire in unity and encourage as many UK school children as possible to simultaneously read aloud on that day. Thereby raising awareness of the importance of reading for young people and raising funds to buy books for Kenyan children.
Across Sub-Saharan Africa, literacy skills among learners in primary school are below the expected levels. This is due to a range of factors, often including a lack of library infrastructure, shortage of reading materials, an inadequate number of teachers equipped with library management skills, as well as insufficient policies to promote the development of libraries.
KWEST and SAL were founded to provide libraries in schools and communities. Our libraries are active hubs of learning where children get free access to books and literacy support.
I love reading and the KWEST Library, we all came top in exams at school this term because we understand the questions now. Sharon

KWEST has already shipped over 5000 books donated by UK schools and children for use in our libraries and schools in Watamu.
SAL have established 295 school libraries across 22 Kenyan counties, purchased and supplied 272,929 books.

Sponsor one child for as little as £5, or several children for £10, £50 or £100 or more and:
- Break a world record in reading aloud
- Celebrate Kenya’s inaugural National Reading Day
- Raise children’s voices in the fight against climate change
- Celebrate the power of readin
- Nurture a generation of readers and environmental advocates.
All money raised will go to buy a book for every Kenyan child that takes part in the event and also towards sending more donated books from the UK.
