Story

Sandy 'Bear With Me' Appeal

Voiceless grief for children and young people can lead to poor outcomes later in life such as physical and mental health challenges. Sandy Bear provides much needed and ongoing support to children, young people and their families. We work closely with them over many months to help them through their challenging grief journey in a positive and healthy way.

My grand-daughter was 3 years old when her dad died. She couldn't understand why she couldn't see her daddy but thank goodness for Sandy Bear; she attended and made things to remind her of her Dad. Even as a teenager she asked to go back to Sandy Bear, and this helped her deal with it. She asked a lot of questions and made friends with others in the same situation as her. Without Sandy Bear, I think she would have stayed unconfident and shy, they have helped her so much, she is a very confident and happy young lady.

Our needs are pressing...whilst demand for our service is increasing against backdrop of Covid 19, our income, so reliant on community fundraising, has significantly decreased. We need to increase our capacity by adding another team member to cope with demand and to secure the service for the future. We can also do so much more with your support:

£10 provides a child with the resources to complete a Sandy Bear session

£25 provides a memory box and teddy bear to create a keepsake of cherished memories

£165 sponsors Sandy Bear Children's Bereavement Charity for a day

We would love to bring our community together to support us in a positive and healthy way. Did you know:

- Pembrokeshire Coast Path 186 miles / 392,832 steps

- Wales Coast Path 870 miles / 1,879,680 steps

- It takes 10 mins to walk on average 1,000 steps.

We are asking our community to join together and help us remotely walk around the Pembrokeshire Coast path but with an overall ambition to walk around Wales...it is our ambition that our Pembrokeshire service will one day be available to every child in Wales.

About the charity

We believe that every child and young person should have the opportunity to thrive and to be the very best that they can be. For some children and young people, the death of a loved one will turn their world upside down in an instant, leaving them bereft. Sandy Bear is a charity dedicated to improving and strengthening the emotional health and well-being of young people aged 0-18 (and their families), who have experienced the death of a loved one. We aim to reduce emotional difficulties in childhood and the prevalence of mental illness in later life that can result in a decreased quality of life, poorer educational attainment, social and health problems and increased vulnerability. We achieve this by working closely with children, young people and families to support them through their grief, and by educating relevant professionals to know what to do when they are dealing with bereavement.
