Story

Carrying Care Coast to Coast – 85 Miles for the East of England Ambulance Service Charity

My name is Sian Clark and I’m the Director of Digital Innovation at the East of England Ambulance Service. I'm taking on a challenge that’s a little out of the ordinary for my day job… I’ll be walking with my son the Coast to Coast route, 85 miles, not including all the extra miles to reach accommodation each night while carrying an ambulance kit bag and a defibrillator the entire way.

Why?

Because every day, the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST) teams go above and beyond for our patients and communities. I want to honour that dedication and raise vital funds for the East of England Ambulance Service Charity, which supports staff, volunteers, patients and the communities they serve.

From welfare support and wellbeing initiatives to community projects and equipment that goes beyond standard NHS funding, the Charity makes a real difference.

Why the kit bag and defib?

They symbolise the weight ambulance staff carry every single day, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Walking that distance with them is our way of showing solidarity and raising awareness of the incredible work happening across the organisation. Add these to 6 days worth of clothes, food and water... it's going to be a very difficult challenge both physically and mentally.

Our schedule:

Starting May 25th 2026 with the approx. miles below not including getting to our accommodation which will be Youth Hostel and Bunk Houses on route.

Day 1 - Bowness on Solway to Carlise (16 miles)

Day 2 - Carlise to Gilsland (19 miles)

Day 3 - Gilsland to Twice Brewed (9 miles Hilly)

Day 4 - Twice Brewed to Chollerford (12 mile tough terrain)

Day 5 - Chollerford to Heddon on the wall (15 miles)

Day 6 - Finish Heddon to Wallsend Newcastle (14 miles)
