The need for food among Union County residents is staggering. The COVID pandemic has prompted the loss of nearly 7,000 jobs in our county, forcing hunger and homelessness onto thousands of residents who were living comfortably before the crisis..

Last year, because of COVID, we distributed 498,419 pounds of food at our drive-thru pantry program. That's in addition to the 41,538 prepared meals served in our dining hall to Shelter residents and independently-living community neighbors in need of food.

For emergency shelter residents, prepared meals allow them to save money more quickly, promoting a move back into independent living within weeks.

For community neighbors, regular pickup of pantry food and free meals in our dining hall can make the difference between having enough money for food and paying the rent. Thus, food support helps residents avoid eviction and homelessness.

Traditionally, Union County Public Schools, churches, businesses and individuals contribute more than $45,000. Last year, even as schools and churches had constrained on-site activities, they contributed more than $35,000. What an amazing effort!

This year, the Shelter again expects greatly increased demand for services as our neighbors face extended unemployment, closed businesses and evictions.

Because many churches and schools are meeting on limited schedules or virtually, weve added the Just Giving platform as an easy way for groups to raise funds virtually.
