Story

Maryam was 14 years old when she arrived in the UK from Libya with her family to seek refugee protection. She studied hard at school but was devastated to find out that her immigration status meant she couldn't continue her education and she had to watch her friends go off to university without her. She's now a successful graduate, a STAR Equal Access Activist and trustee.

Hear about her journey to university and just how much this opportunity meant to her and her family. Your donation can ensure other people don't miss out.

Being able to access education is life changing, but across the UK people seeking asylum are locked out of university and many refugees and people seeking asylum tell us they find the UK university system difficult to navigate and struggle to get the help they need to do so.

This is where STAR comes in! We have been campaigning for better access to university since 2008 - in 2015 only 25 universities offered scholarships now 75 do!

STAR changed my life. I am able to get back to education, made lots of friends and connections.

In the past year we have

*Provided advice and information to over 300 people seeking asylum & refugees

*Held webinars. open days and set up a UCAS mentoring project to help people get to university

*Supported 9 universities to set up new scholarship programmes

*Empowered 8 STAR groups to campaign for Equal Access on their campus

*And much, much more!

With your help we can reach even more people!

University provides a safe, empowering environment where people fleeing war & persecution can make friends and build a new life. Studies have shown that education can mitigate the negative effects of traumatic experiences. Denying access is a huge waste of potential and has long-term impacts on the well-being and employability of refugees,

Your donation will directly support STAR's Equal Access work, including:

*Responding to enquiries from refugees about how to access university

*Expert advice to universities to help establish and maintain scholarships for refugees and people seeking asylum in the UK

*Supporting refugee activists and STAR groups to campaign for change;

*Events, outreach and resources to raise awareness of access to higher education opportunities for refugees and people seeking asylum.

About the charity

STAR is the national network of students building a society where refugees are welcomed. Working together we volunteer and work directly with refugees, campaign for policy change and equal access to university for refugees, and learn about refugees and asylum.
