All of the artists have agreed to donate at least one piece of their art & some will also travel to various projects to help develop the creative skills of the young people. This will not only provide much needed therapy but will also provide them with various skills to enable them to set up small businesses such as screen printing, mural painting etc. to support themselves & their community
The first phase of the project launched on Jan 27th 2019 with the help of renowned artists Inkie, George 'Sen-One' Morillo (New York), Nicolas Dixon & Chapter.
It resulted in many collaborative works of art being completed by all and the music /creative school along with the boys home having some incredible pieces of art painted on them.
Sadly many of the boys that live there have endured very difficult times living on the street, due to this they need a little extra care and attention away from other children.
Aside from the hunger, and lonely nights sleeping on the street, sadly many of the children become involved in drugs, and many are also abused and raped on the streets by the gangs of older men.
With on-going counselling, home education, and school education and 24 hour access to on-site 'big brothers' and carers, the centre does its best to help the boys to heal, and move on from where they have been, both physically, and mentally.
Angels Gate pioneered a very new approach in Tanzania, using male carers, instead of the typical women. They discovered that these 'big brothers' as they are called, interact better with the boys, and then in return the boys open up in a better way too.
Some boys of course cant manage at school after all they have faced, and so options for vocational training, or artistic pursuits are also a necessity for their fresh start in life.
With all the boys Angels Gate's social work team get straight to work tracking down their families and relatives. Sometimes families have missed their children in fact, and they can be re united.
Other times the boys come from broken homes, or parents who have passed away. Quite often they flee home seeking a new life, even seeking employment to be able to pay for their school fees. However once the street gets a hold of boys, the cycle is hard to break.
Of course where possible the utmost is done to reunite the children with their families somehow, be it a relative, or parent. It can be a difficult process, but with some counselling it can be achieved, and in doing so provide a safe and loving home for those lucky enough to return to their loved ones and relations.
Naturally the centre has running costs. 24 hour staff, clothing, soap, food, rent & the education of the boys who live there, so all donations are very much appreciated.
It costs just $100 per child a month to offer a safe space away from the street to develop their education, receive counselling and to develop their life skills.
