Story
As an organization with more than a century of experience in caring for our community, the Valley of the Sun YMCA responds quickly to these challenges; creatively expanding our programs to meet our community when, where and how we are needed most.
Thanks to the generous support of our donors, we can continue to ensure the health, safety and well-being of every YMCA child and family. We are working to pave the way for a bright future to all of our community no matter their age, race, gender or socioeconomic status.
SUPPORTING SENIORS
Seniors comprise 18% of the Arizona population and have experienced increased isolation due to the pandemic. Many seniors in the community lack the resources to engage virtually. As they remain cautious against COVID-19, the Y is passionate about supporting this population. We work to reduce depression and fear through outreach programs and safe social gatherings. Help the Y continue our senior outreach program to connect with those who need a supportive friend or voice during this uncertain time.
In 2022, the Valley of the Sun YMCA will: Provide experiences for seniors to socialize and develop a healthy lifestyle
DROWNING PREVENTION
The world is 70% water and children are 100% curious. Childhood drownings are the leading cause of accidental death of children in Arizona under the age of five. We provide programs that provide critical safety around water knowledge and teach swimming skills. Programs range from group and private swim lessons to collaborating with schools to deliver drowning prevention programs. Help the Y be a leader in drowning prevention programming in 2022.
In 2022, the Valley of the Sun YMCA will: Provide free swim lessons to 2,000 children
ENGAGING OPPORTUNITY YOUTH
In Arizona, one in nine people ages 16-24 are unemployed and not in school. They are more likely to have worsening health and rely on government support. The Y partners with opportunity youth in the community to provide pathways to employment, shelter, food and a solid future. This population includes young men and women who have faced significant roadblocks to academic, job and life success and who may be navigating educational challenges, pregnancy, homelessness, disabilities or the juvenile justice system. Help the Y serve this growing population with critically needed services.
In 2022, the Valley of the Sun YMCA will: Serve 600 youth ages 16-24 with educational support, job training, and life skills training
