Story

Brecknock Museum & Art Gallery was recognized as one of the finest small museums in Wales, attracting over 20,000 visitors a year, before it closed in 2013 for refurbishment under the Cultural Hub Brecon Project.  Its collections relate to the former county of Breconshire (Brecknock) and include nationally-important artefacts such as the medieval log boat from Llangors Lake and an art collection of work by many well-known artists who, since the 18th Century, have visited or lived in this beautiful area.

The refurbished museum and art gallery in the iconic former Brecknock Shire Hall will reopen in autumn 2018 as part of the Cultural Hub Brecon.  The Brecknock Society and Museum Friends (BS&MF) is a funding partner in this exciting development led by Powys County Council and supported by a number of partners, including the Heritage Lottery Fund and Welsh Government.  We are contributing £195,000 towards the costs as a result of having sold the original Museum building in 2010.

Some specific items are excluded from the Cultural Hub Brecon Project and are to be funded through separate projects and appeals.  BS&MF is seeking to raise funds for the Conservation & Display Project under this appeal.  It covers the specialist conservation of nine significant objects, including the bronze statue of Boadicea and the 19th century Welsh harp in the cover photo,  and secondly additional display cabinets, including a purpose-made cabinet for easy access to more of the important collection of watercolour paintings.  More details of the items we are raising money for can be seen in the Photo gallery below or found on the Conservation & Display Project page on the BS&MF website.

Our Statement of Principles for the use of funds we raise under this appeal can be found here.  If you would like us to allocate your donation to a specific item, please state this when you donate.
