Story
New East Cinema is a monthly film series set to uncover the most thought-provoking, daring and vibrant cinema coming from the New East: Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Russia and Central Asia.
Initiated in October 2015 by Calvert 22 Foundation and curated by The New Social, the project was received with excitement, the feedback being overwhelming positive. Following the project’s success, in April 2016 we were delighted to partner with the Barbican Centre to bring additional screenings to a very diverse London audience.
The film series debuted with the UK premiere of Bulgarian/Romanian co-production Viktoria and then took viewers on a journey across various New East countries including Poland, Serbia, Russia and Kazakhstan.
After seven successful screenings hosted at our space and three at the Barbican Centre, we need your support to continue this project in 2017.
