Story
We urgently need to raise £10,000, so we can make sure fostered children and their former foster carers can stay in touch when they want to. This is a vital issue with a huge impact on children’s wellbeing.
Right now there are over 65,000 children living with foster families across the UK. For them, maintaining important relationships can be more important than anything else. These relationships help them build trust and gain a sense of belonging and identity. When they are lost it can feel like bereavement, and it can harm their development.
So we were horrified when 1/3 of children we asked told us they had been prevented from keeping in touch with their foster carers after they had moved on. Here’s what two young people told us:
‘They were my family and shared my life. They loved and cared for me and I trusted them.’
‘The idea that you can live in a home for years and then be expected to move to a new home and never look back is abhorrent.’
Unless we act now this will happen to far too many children across the UK this year. With your support, we can make change happen.
£30 could help one of our support team to work with a fostering service to ensure relationships are prioritised during placement transitions.
£25 could help us provide advice and guidance to social work professionals and adopters, educating them on the importance of supporting children’s previous relationships.
£10 could help pay for a foster carer or young person to share their story with MPs and the Children’s Minister to persuade them to champion children’s relationships.
