Story

Kelvin has fundraised for Parity for Disability, a local charity, for over 25 years. Parity provides services in the community for adults with multiple disabilities, and Kelvin knows about living with a disability as he has cerebral palsy, which mainly affects his legs. He has fundraised for Parity in countless ways, helping keep Parity’s shops running, winning sponsorship and support from the community. Kelvin’s outgoing personality and sense of humour have made him a strong ambassador for the charity. Kelvin answered a Parity advert for volunteers in 1984. The first thing he did for the charity was write a letter, to take round local companies asking them to advertise on a donated stock car to be driven in a bangers race. Kelvin raised £375, not a bad start! Over the years, Kelvin has spent many hours each week collecting carloads of donated items for Parity’s three charity shops, and full collection boxes from local traders.  On top of all this, in 2005 and 2006 Kelvin’s fundraising work took on another dimension when he brought in £4,000 doing two successive sponsored abseils at 150-foot St Omer Barracks in Aldershot. Kelvin effectively got the word out about his activities and it even hit the news desks of the local radio stations. He says he didn’t expect things to grow so much, but rose to the challenge and enjoyed all the publicity!  In 2007, Kelvin raised another £1,585 with a 100 foot zip wire challenge out of a tree in Farnham.  He was also hoisted 100 feet in the air and then pulled 150 feet over a raging river in Snowdonia, raising £2,000. In 2012 he abseiled again  down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth, raising £5,000.  In 2016, Kelvin’s completed a virtual bike ride on an accessible bike at the gym, covering 879 miles over 15 weeks, the distance from Land’s End to John O’Groats. In the process, he raised £500 for Parity.  Please support Kelvin as he prepares for his next amazing feat.
