Story
This event aims to bring together organists of all standards, including professional concert organists, Directors of music, organ scholars and school children. Admission to the event is free, and refreshments will be available to purchase all through the night. There will be beanbags, and audience members are more than welcome to bring sleeping bags! All money raised from this concert will go into our Hubbub crowdfunding page (https://pembroke.hubbub.net/p/choirtourzambia/) supporting Pembroke College Choir’s outreach work in Zambia.
About the Tour In September 2017, the Choir will be spending two weeks in Zambia participating in extensive outreach work and giving performances. Carried out in association with The Muze Trust and Estelle Trust, this trip is very much intended to serve as a cultural exchange in which we can learn something about the Zambian musical culture whilst passing on some of what we know in return.
What will we be doing?
Whilst most Choir tours are merely made up of Concerts and sight-seeing, we wanted to ensure that we were giving something back. Here are just a few of the ways in which we will be working with the wider community in Zambia. · Giving notation workshops to the music leaders in Mukuni Village and helping them create a record of their song tradition as it currently stands · Giving music workshops to the children at the Ebenezer Orphanage and the Linda Secondary School · Collaborating with a Community Choir in Lusaka and helping them create recordings of some of their music · Performing a joint concert with the chamber choir Vox Zambezi · Giving music workshops in Kachele and Misisi Villages, two of the poorest areas near Lusaka · Organising a fundraising concert to support the Lilayi Elephant Orphanage
Please do sponsor our Bach-a-thon, and share our story with friends and family. If you are an organist and are interested in participating in the event, email arel2@cam.ac.uk.
