Sterts

The Ladies Inconvenience

A key issue for Sterts is the loading on the Ladies Toilet, particularly when the queues extend outside into the moorland rain. With 17,500 visitors per season we need to address this problem.

Story

Sterts must be one of the UK's most unusual theatrical settings: a 400-seat amphitheatre nestling on the grassy side of Bodmin Moor, in the open Cornish air yet protected from summer rain by a massive canopy. With a stage graced by some of the biggest names in show business, such as Jo Brand, Ed Byrne and Josh Widdicombe it is the talented and enthusiastic local performers that make Sterts very much a ‘community theatre’ and arts centre. The day-to-day running of Sterts is carried out by volunteers and although survival for all small theatres in these difficult times is a real challenge, so long as audiences keep enjoying our shows and our volunteers are there to provide their invaluable help, Sterts will hold fast to its founding dream of theatrical opportunity for everybody. Since its’ foundation in 1982 Sterts has supported artists both professional & amateur. We have done this by providing a diverse programme of over 70 live theatre/music/dance events each summer at the centre in Upton Cross. We also have a programme of smaller scale events both at the centre and via outreach work during the spring & autumn. Approximately 40% of the programme is devoted to events that are for and include young people. Our programming of community theatre interspersed with outstanding professional performers gives us a background that allows excellence to thrive. During the season the theatre hosts approximately 17,500 visitors per year leading to heavy usage of the centre and its facilities. In order to address this issue we wish to restructure and improve the Ladies’ facilities to provide extra cubicles and washing facilities and accompanying plumbing, drainage and decoration.
