Story

'I recently cared for a lady named Jane who was in a lot of pain when she was admitted to the hospice. This pain made her feel very anxious and it was having a huge impact on her daily activities. I listened to how she felt, talked to her about her fears, wishes and the future. This one to one time really helped me to understand how best to support Jane.

I gave her a detailed daily pain chart where she could make a note of any pain or medication she had each day. She could see when she would most likely feel discomfort and we could help her before it got really bad.

Jane became much more relaxed and we could help her to spend quality time with her family when they visited. It felt very rewarding to know that by listening to her concerns, I could make a difference to her quality of life.'  St Luke's Nurse, Sophie Kiely.
