Story
What if you had to walk miles to get health treatment? How would you cope? What if a simple mobile phone could save a life?
Malawi is a beautiful country but has a geographically dispersed population. Many rural clinics do not have direct access to a doctor. Patients are frequently referred to distant hospitals by Clinical Officers located in these rural areas, when they arrive displaying complex symptons that cannot be easily diagnosed. A referral could involve a long and uncomfortable journey and may also take patients away from their work and family which may cause additional hardship.
The Virtual Doctors service, already successfully being delivered in 39 sites in Zambia, aims to reduce the number of referrals and enable patients to be treated in their local area, and at the same time, our advice service is helping to educate Clinical Officers and encourage peer to peer communication. We must raise additional resources to enable our vision to become a reality. Will you add your support to enable our service to grow so we can help even more people?
We have the confidence in our service and we always intended to roll this out more widely and into new countries by harnessing the power of mobile technology. It is so simple and easily scalable. This invitation to take our pilot service into Malawi has come little earlier than planned. Despite the challenges, we have leapt into action and have launched our Malawi Appeal to raise an additional £40,000 within the next three months. We don't want to miss this opportunity so we need your help! Every donation, however small, will mount up:-
£200 could pay for a handheld device
£500 could help to train a clinical officer and set up costs in a clinic
£760 could bring a new clinic on to the Virtual Doctors platform
