UPDATE! Pip, Julian and Ella (supported by the mighty Lees family) completed the challenge on 5th July. We are all so proud of Pip for the amazing achievement, for proving to herself that she could do it and for making everyone laugh even when the wind was against them.
Julian had to step in as I was unable to ride and proved once again his super dad credentials
Why We were impressed with the inclusivity of the At Home Superhero Series and Pip decided we should all take part to raise money for Limbpower, a really great charity. Pip has a hypermobility condition which means she suffers from mobility problems and CRPS. She has set herself the challenge of cycling 20km before 15 July - it will take a few rides as she’s still recovering from a broken knee, broken wrist, broken hand, broken finger....there’s always something! But she’s still smiling and making us laugh. This challenge allows for flexibility, which is perfect for someone who is easily injured due to hypermobility (pun intended). Depending on whether Pip is injured or sore, we can complete the 20km on bike, crutches, her wheelchair or even piggyback (well maybe not - she’s nearly as tall as us!). For someone who hasn’t been able to take part in group sports for a long while, this is a great motivator to have fun and raise some money. Thanks for your support.
Who Pip is the Superhero in our team and Ella and I will be her support riders. Our Team is called Wheels of Xandar in honour of our favourite movie, The Guardians of the Galaxy. We’ll be posting updates and maybe a few photos.
What SuperHeroes is the UK’s one and only disability sports series for the Everyday Superhero. Their mission is to create fun full throttle mass participation sports events where people with disabilities (aka the everyday superheroes) call the shots and don’t have to worry about cut off times or equipment restrictions.
They hold two events each year. Unfortunately due to Covid-19 this year’s Superhero Tri is being replaced by “At Home SuperHeroes” to be completed anywhere!
The Charity LimbPower was launched in November 2009 to engage amputees and individuals with limb impairments in physical activity, sport and the arts to improve quality of life and to aid lifelong rehabilitation.
In July 2014 LimbPower became a National Disability Sports Organisation, sitting alongside WheelPower, Cerebral Palsy Sport (CP Sport), Dwarf Sport, British Blind Sport (BBS), UK Deaf Sport, Mencap Sport and Special Olympics Great Britain (SOGB). LimbPower also run arts based activities including confidence workshops and a photography club.
