Story

Help us rescue 10 special needs cats from Greece!

At Catcuddles we’ve been working with the Second Chance Animal Rescue in Athens for several years, helping find loving homes for some of the special needs cats they have rescued from the streets. We now want to achieve one more ambitious goal before the UK leaves the EU (and bringing cats into the country is likely to become more complicated). Together with SCARS.GR volunteers, we have identified 10 special needs cats we want to help bring to Catcuddles in London to find them forever homes.

We need your help to raise funds to make this life changing mission possible within this tight timescale – our goal is an ambitious £1,600. We will help as many of the 10 cats as possible if we raise less but would really love to help them all.

SCARS rescues many cats who are desperately struggling to live on the streets; their work really saves lives every week. They are our sister charity in the no-kill philosophy and treatment of strays with amazing track record neutering stray and feral colonies in several suburbs in Athens. While things have improved a lot in recent years thanks to organisations such as SCARS, the situation for street cats in Athens is still dire. For the lucky ones who get rescued, finding adoptive homes in Athens isn’t always easy and many cats stay with fostering volunteers for months, sometimes years, often living with as many as 20 cats.

Special needs cats in particular struggle to find adoptive homes in Athens. We know from experience there are many more suitable homes on offer for them in London – we always have more indoor homes on offer here than cats who are suited to apartment living and special needs cats make perfect ‘flat cats’. Every adoption in turn frees up a place at SCARS in Athens to save another cat’s life and bring him or her in from the streets. Special needs cats still waiting for their rescue are struggling to survive as strays if their mobility, sight or hearing is affected.

Some of the cats we want to help with your support include young Evita who was born with a deformed leg; Ramses who suffered two broken legs that healed out of alignment and cause him to walk differently; and Lino, Felicitas, Schweppes and Sly who are fully or partially blind. They are all sweet, young cats waiting for our help to transform their lives and help them into happy, loving, forever homes.

Every pound really helps and adds up – we are so grateful for your support.

Ramses is one of the 10 cats waiting in Athens to come to London. He would make a perfect indoor cat for a London flat. Ramses is 1 1/2 years old, when he was younger, he sadly broke both his back legs and they healed slightly 'wonky'. As a result he walks a bit differently but he doesn't care at all - he is a happy, sociable boy and loves human company in particular. Ramses would love to find his own forever home and a lap to cuddle up on but like so many special needs cats in Greece, he has been overlooked by adopters.

Sly is one of the special cats we want to help. His rescuers at SCARS.GR write: "Sly was living for 4 months enclosed in a very small vet clinic, helping the recovery of other small animals! He has a wonderful character and keeps the best of relations with all animal kingdom! As his sweet cat-heart was beating and offering, so Rena’s heart (the tender heart of one more volunteer) beat for him, and she is hosting him, and waits for a tender heart, so the little “volunteer” to find the home that can accommodate his “huge” little-cat-heart!"

Thank you so much for your support! We are so excited to be over the £1,000 mark already. Your donations will help cats like 5 month old Evita, pictured here. Sweet Evita was born with a deformed front leg. This doesn't stop her from being a playful, happy kitten - unlike humans, cats don't care about what we may consider a disability. Evita is a perfect kitten with a lot of love to give. Evita has been overlooked for adoption in Athens but will make a perfect 'flat cat' in an indoor home for someone in London.

I go to Crete every year, and spend two weeks feeding all the strays. Things are definitely getting better in the islands, but still a long way to go 😪

We adopted Helion a Greek special needs kitty. He has bought us more joy, laughter and love than we could ever have hoped. Good luck and big thanks Ruby, Lucy and Helion xx
