Story
12hr Run/Walk/Crawl Attempt
Having run less than 10 miles total in the last 2 months, I’ve decided in my infinite wisdom that in a few days’ time it’s a good idea to try to go for 12 hours continuously. The loop of trail I’ve chosen is about 7km (4.4mi) long with a hefty 1,450ft (440m) of elevation, and unfortunately full exposure to the Balinese sun. Starting at 5am on the 16th June, Goal A is to complete 9 loops (likely way too ambitious): approximately 63km (40mi) and 13,000ft (4,000m) of ascent (that’s a long way up and down…). Realistically though, with no training (or any appropriate kit…) I’ll be very happy just to still be moving in the right direction at the 12hr mark.
Plastic Pollution | The problem
Seriously though, the state of our oceans at the moment is pretty hideous. Every day more plastic washes up on the beaches and we hear more horror stories of marine wildlife choked, suffocated or disfigured by floating plastic (here’s a pretty horrific recent example). Learning to freedive here in what’s essentially a tropical beach paradise, it’s heartbreaking to see the number of plastic bags that float ghost-like through the blue as we swim up and down the dive lines. Unless we do something, that plastic isn’t going anywhere, and it’s fast becoming a very serious threat our oceans.
Parley and Apneista | The solution
Here in Bali, and indeed all over the world, there’s a lot being done to try to help the situation. Tomorrow for example, on World Ocean’s Day, Apneista Freediving and Yoga school are hosting beach and ocean clean-ups, alongside a number of other events to raise awareness for plastic avoidance and removal. In association with Parley’s 100 Islands’ Protected initiative, this is part of a campaign to implement short- and long-term programs to tackle plastic pollution in local island communities (such as here in Amed, Bali). The video below gives a pretty good overview and shows just how much of a positive effort can be made.
How Your Money Will Help
The money raised here will go directly towards funding further clean-ups at Apneista school, and most importantly, raising awareness of the issues and solutions in the local community – the place it’s going to make the most difference. Every small amount helps.

Really important issue which can be solved. We need to reduce, reuse and recycle and put in place effective solid waste management around the 7 Asian rivers that account for most of the problem.
