Universities such as DMU have a major responsibility to contribute to society through their public engagement and to bring about positive change for the public good.

At the centre of DMU’s engagement strategy is our award-winning Square Mile programme. Launched in 2011, Square Mile uses DMU’s academic expertise and a network of student volunteers to offer potentially life-changing services in the Leicester community.

Schools and education

A large number of Square Mile projects have been created to offer free support to primary and secondary schools through a range of different areas including mentoring in maths, English and science, speech therapy support, sports activities and IT training for parents and children.

Health

We utilise the research expertise of our academics and the knowledge and enthusiasm of our students to run projects that have a positive impact on the health of our community. These have included a record-breaking campaign to recruit people to the stem cell register; a project that has helped people living with diabetes to manage their condition; a project to administer free hearing tests.

Community and charity support

We organise events and activities that bring together and benefit our local community, in addition to working with local and national charities to enhance and support their work in Leicestershire.
