Story
At the end of last year, we spent 5 weeks on a medical elective in Tanzania. The purpose of this was to experience nursing care in a less developed country, but it became so much more than that.
Our first four weeks were spent at Mt Meru hospital, a government hospital in Arusha. Carys spent two weeks in the emergency department followed by the labour ward. Amy spent two weeks on a general medical ward followed by two weeks in intensive care. Our final week was spent in a clinic in the Maasai village of Engaruka.
It is very difficult to describe what we witnessed within a limited word count, and what we saw was very personal to us both. However, the medical care is under-resourced, under-funded and there are issues with staff shortages. The government hospital is subsidised, but no treatment will be given unless it can be paid for first and a receipt is produced. There is nothing to fall back on - if you cannot pay for your treatment, you will not receive any treatment. The staff do their very best with what is available to them, but daily they run out of simple equipment such as syringes, incontinence pads and even gloves. It is frowned upon to congratulate a pregnant woman because infant mortality is still so high, and the average life expectancy is 60yrs - the age many in the UK begin retirement planning.
Despite these issues, Tanzania is a beautiful country with a wonderful culture and people. We truly felt at home in our 5 weeks, and we have already planned a return trip for 3 weeks in April.
The purpose of our crowd funding is to raise money to buy supplies to take to Tanzania and also buy and donate medicines while we are in the country. We will send regular updates prior to our trip to let you know what we would like to buy and share some of our personal stories.
Anything donations would be gratefully appreciated, or even just sharing this page with your family and friends.
Asante sana rafikis!
