Story
Basingstoke Ladies Rugby team are entering the Basingstoke Lions Swimathon with 50% of the monies raised going to the ladies rugby team and the other 50% going to support the Aquatics team from Basingstoke at the 2017 Special Olympics in Sheffield. The Special Olympics is a world-wide event designed to allow those with intellectual disabilities to compete against others with similar problems. It is a very worthwhile project and Lions Clubs throughout the UK are supporting it.
Basingstoke Ladies rugby team is new, having only formed a year ago. We initially only had a few players turning to training on a Wednesday. However since then we have recruited roughly 30 ladies. We have participated in the Hampshire Touch tournaments and are currently participating in the Merit League which a 15 a side contact league where we are hoping to finish first. We don't currently get the same funding as the men's teams and all of appearances have been in borrowed kit. The money raised from this swimathon will go to good use and will used not only to help our team develop further but also to allow local athletes with learning disabilities participate in competitive sport.
