Story
We (Birkdale Conservative Club) want to provide a Community Public Access Defibrillator for Birkdale Village. Early defibrillation increases the chances of surviving cardiac arrest. Every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces the chances of survival by 7-10%. Only around 20% of the 30,000 Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrest patients are in a 'shockable' rhythm when Emergency Medical Services arrive. We want to increase the chances of survival for our local community.
The Birkdale Conservative Club have identified a potential location on the front of our building for installing the defibrillator and cabinet (subject to planning approval). There are defibrillators in the nearby doctors surgeries and the train station, however, these are not available 24/7. They are only available when those facilities are open. When we asked people in the village if they knew the location of the nearest defibrillator the vast majority didn't have a clue. We want to provide a defibrillator that is available all of the time, not just during a businesses opening hours. We want people to know where it is. Proper signage and a bright yellow cabinet and an easily visible location should achieve this, along with educating the local community and businesses. We need £2500 for the defibrillator itself, the heated cabinet, electrical installation and consumables such as spare pads (these can only be used once), battery replacement and community training. The defibrillator has step by step audio instructions and visual instructions on it and is designed so that virtually anybody can use it. However, training the local shopkeepers and their employees will also be beneficial.
