    Story

UPDATE: The objective of this page has changed, as has Deborah's situation.

Deborah suffered a terrible accident in Santorini which left her with a serious head injury. The page was initially set up as our family was concerned with what we felt were substandard levels of care she was receiving in a public hospital in Greece. Due to a lack of basic resources and hygiene, we were worried her condition would only worsen and we wanted her home in Britain as quickly as possible.

Deborah's travel insurance paid for her to be flown home on a commercial flight — rushed due to airport strikes in Athens. Due to the rush she was discharged without arranging a transfer to hospital at home.

Upon arriving home, Deborah's family took her home and had to push for her to be admitted to a hospital in Manchester. Following another scan her neurosurgeon has taken her to theatre for surgery which will be followed up with months of rehabilitation.

Getting Deborah home was one of the main objectives of this page. The main objective now is to ensure stable care for in the professional manner we wanted from the beginning.

We are continuing to raise money for Deborah to help with any ongoing care costs. While in Athens she paid for a room during her stay and scans. The fund will also help with unforeseen costs her accident could bring her in the future. These include possibly adapting her home and providing specialist equipment for Deborah once the long-term implications of her accident are clear.

We have spoken to JustGiving and they say our change in objective is fine as long as it is made clear. We imagine that most people who have donated would be happy to keep their donations in the pot. However, we do appreciate the situation has changed hugely. Any donors who want their money returned anonymously need to contact JustGiving by October 29. Call 0345 0782063, press option 1 then option 2, and have your email address ready. It will be generated automatically.

I'm so sorry to hear of this. I had a very similar experience in a Greek hospital. The care is terrible. Luckily for me I only had a bad bite infection and required a drip. Hope you get her out soon
