Story
On the 26th October last year I got a call from my close friend Brendan. His wife was in labour so I was expecting to hear good news. The first words I heard from Brendan were “its bad news” this followed with a very emotional phone call telling us that Susan gave birth to a little girl, named Hollie, who died 30 minutes after . It was heart breaking.
Brendan and Susan later found out that Hollie had passed away due to Strep B infection. A very easily preventable disease if tested for in pregnancy. Unfortunately, unless the mother is showing symptoms, they are never tested for.
On 1st of May I will be running the Belfast Marathon in memory of Hollie. For those who know me, I have trouble running the length of myself.
Half of the money raised will be we used to go towards a CuddleCot which Brendan and Susan are raising money for to donate in Hollie’s name. The CuddleCot has been internationally recognised across the world as significantly helping parents who suffer the loss of a baby. Dealing with the death of a baby is clearly an incredibly difficult event for parents and bereaved parents should be given the option of spending Time with their baby. Providing families Time through the use of the CuddleCot is internationally encouraged by midwives, bereavement practitioners, still birth/neonatal charities, and academics. Time allows the family to form an important bond with their baby; whether changing a nappy, dressing the baby, taking photographs or simply just staying close and this unquestionably helps families in dealing with their loss.
The rest of the money raised with go towards the charity, Sands, who helped Brendan and Susan during their loss. The charity supports anyone affected by the death of a baby, works in partnership with health professionals to try to ensure that bereaved parents and families receive the best possible care and funds research that could help to reduce the numbers of babies dying and families devastated by this tragedy.
