In 1905, after the passing of the Free Libraries Act, the town of Sandown on the Isle of Wight was given £2,000 by Andrew Carnegie to build a library for the benefit of the town and all its residents. The plot of land for the library was donated by local businessman Alexander Keller. Now in 2017, the plaque on the side of the library which commemorates Andrew Carnegie's generous gift and distinguishes us as one of only 660 Carnegie libraries in the UK is illegible after 112 years of weathering and erosion. The Friends of Sandown Library are raising money to get the plaque re-cut in order that our heritage is not forgotten which is especially important in these times of austerity and cuts to libraries across the UK.
