Alfie is a very special 5yr old boy with down syndrome.
Despite the difficulties he faces daily he still manages to put a smile on the face of anyone he passes and is known in the Walmersley community as the sunshine kid.
Down syndrome is a learning disability but can also come with many associated medical conditions. Just one example is that Alfie was born with a congenital heart defect and at the age of 2yrs old underwent corrective surgery, although the surgery was successful Alfie still has a small hole in his heart and a slight heart murmur.
Alfie immune system is very poor. He tends to pick up any bugs and infections that are going around very easily. Unless treated quickly these could be potentially fatal.
He's a brave lad who's already been through so much and still attends many appointments each month during most of the time he ensures his medical team know exactly how much he dislikes them.
Alfie is Disney mad and his parents Adele and Gary would love nothing more than to take him to see his favourite characters. Unfortunately Adele can't work due to Alfie disability and she needs to be available at the drop of a hat in case of any emergency.
Gary works full time (and the rest) to make ends meet however this means he rarely gets to spend quality time with Alfie because of the hours he works.
