A crazy bunch of mainly NHS workers have decided that they needed a challenge! As if working for the NHS wasn't challenge enough!

The 3 Peaks Challenge certainly is what it says - yes! Climbing three mountains (Ben Nevis, Scafell and Snowdon) in about 24 hours - you read that right 24 HOURS!! This event will commence on 19th May 2017.

Working within a a Head and Neck Surgical Unit, specialising in cancer surgery, it has become quite a passion of ours! A cancer diagnosis in itself is life changing and then comes the surgery, in major cases this can be as long as 10 hours in theatre, and then be told that post surgery you may never eat again or speak again is, of course, life changing.

The aim is to raise funds and awareness for a Headstart which is a wonderful resource in Kent & Sussex for ALL Head & Neck Cancer patients, their families and their carers.

As well as holding regular get-togethers for patients to share experiences they provide equipment and therapies to aid patient recovery. Such as suction machines and nebulisers which enable patients to leave hospital earlier. Being at home aids a better recovery for them and it also frees up bed space!

Here are just a couple of recent examples of what Headstart is up to Some essential equipment has been purchased for Laryngectomy and Tracheostomy patients, in particular, a fully working model were nurses can explain in detail how their voice box works.

Cancer doesn't choose. Some people need more support than others depending on their own personal life situation. Headstart are there for EVERY patient to aid in whichever way each particular patient needs. That is very special to us!
