    Story

We are a family dedicated to preserving life. In 2012 we walked a thousand miles, all the way from Sussex in the UK to the Spanish Pyrenees, with our Irish Cob, Maggie…after eleven years of managing Plawhatch a Biodynamic Farm.

It was not our intention to start a refuge for horses but, when we arrived here, Maggie sent out a call to horses that needed our help in the area. She knew why we had come here! Before long Maggie’s call was answered and the Helios Home for Horses and Humans was born.

So far, we have rescued 12 horses in Sobrarbe, Aragon, most of them over 25 years old. Every horse has come to us in need of a home, love, food and shelter, all happily provided. Each horse has given years of service to humans in this remote mountain area and we feel it is time for us to give back to them!

You can read more about our story including our vision, experience and how we care for the horses via this link:

You can also find us on Facebook: Helios - a home for horses and humans/ Helios- un hogar para caballos y humanos (http://tinyurl.com/helioshorse) ~ full of updates and images.

Until now, we have been funding the care of these amazing animals entirely ourselves but we are currently struggling to meet the outgoings on renting land and buying hay.
It costs us 2€ a day to feed a horse~ This initial figure we are raising will give us the support we need in saving and enhancing the lives of horses. It will cover the horses needs for the next 8 months while we hone the details of our 3 stage business plan and fund-raising strategies to sustain and develop this work. Our ultimate longer term goal is to create a Natural Park for horses!

In anticipation, we are extremely grateful for any donations we receive and we will keep you up to date with our progress.

    Thank you,
    Tom & Julia

So Helios started in 2012 with our Irish Cob Maggie - she was the inspiration and still is for our project. If it wasn't for her the other horses wouldn't have found their way to us I'm sure. Our crowdfunding is nearing its end but even though we haven't reached our target the money we've raised will help Maggie and her herd enormously. Huge thanks to everyone who has donated so far. Maggie and her friends are very grateful.
