Story
This page has been inspired by the incredibly kind and generous offers of donations to help this project become a reality.
Below is a description of the positive mental health awareness project and further information on the garden & story behind it.
MIND TRAP - a garden for RHS Chelsea
This garden is a physical manifestation of my personal experience of suffering from and living with depression. It's purpose is to help those that suffer in similar ways to be assured that they are not alone in their own personal struggles. It also endeavours to explain to others that have no personal experience of suffering what it may feel like, by way of a physical tangible living garden with the use of symbolism and creating an atmosphere.
Mind Trap contains plants, features and structures that have symbolic meaning and this continues into the creation of the spaces themselves. The most dominant features visible from the outside of the garden are the four metal walls and they act as a foil for the planting on the exterior of the garden and enclose the inner, central area of the garden. The walls are hugely symbolic as they can be create a feeling of security, as well as feel like a prison.
The seat in the middle of the central pool helps to replicate a feeling of isolation. The only way off this and down one of the four paths is to take a step into the unknown of the black pool.
The planting will help to create the atmosphere of the garden, with the darker plants flowing gently through to the brighter and happier feeling planting to the front of the garden.
