Story
By donating to help buy a car for ACO-Africa (a small local Ugandan NGO) you will be providing vulnerable people with vital access to hospital and rehabilitative care.
As a small organisation, supported mainly by volunteers, ACO-Africa relies on costly hired transport to take their clients to hospital, sometimes over 80km to the capital city, Kampala. Local health centres are regularly under-resourced, meaning good transport is essential. Currently, emergency health care cannot always be accessed, and vulnerable people must sometimes wait for transport to be available, putting lives at risk.
Sarah, an 8-year-old HIV+ girl with both cancer and tuberculosis, is currently making the long journey to Kampala every week in order to receive treatment. For several months Sarah was unable to walk and in great pain, and so on top of covering her medical bills, ACO-Africa have been paying significant costs to enable her to get to hospital. A car would reduce travel time and expense, and ensure we are able to keep on paying for the treatment of her and others.
ACO-Africa also provides home-based support to the vulnerable and sick in rural communities. These individuals and families sometimes live up to 100km away, accessible only by hazardous mud roads. A high quality vehicle is essential for this work.
ACO-Africa is always seeking ways to expand their work with vulnerable groups, and so hopes to use any additional funds raised to provide medication to young offenders and prisoners, who are often neglected by their families or the government.

8 years agoJust a few things from past months: Yudah and his siblings move into a safe, well-built house in Rakai district; improved the learning environment for children at a school in Rakai by painting and decorating; families infected and affected by HIV were supported with seeds for food growing in their households to provide them with two meals a day; an educational programme was initiated for HIV+ children which included health, art, music therapy and games sessions. School fees have also been paid and 19 children sponsored! :D

8 years agoThis cheery chap is Chrisestom. Chrisestom is 8-years-old and has been unable to walk for sore time. His family didn't know what was wrong and resorted to a traditional 'remedy' of burning his back with a fiery poker to try and 'reactivate' his legs. Thanks to ACO-Africa, he was taken to Namutamba Rehabilitation Centre where he was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. His family now finally have a diagnosis and ACO-Africa will pay for them to be educated about the condition. Chrisestom's wheelchair and special schooling are also being provided!

8 years agoWhen I was in Uganda in August, I met this sweet little 3-year-old girl. I simply couldn't believe that she was that old, as undernourishment since a very young age has left her very small and unable to crawl or speak. The father abandoned the her and her mother after he found out the baby was HIV+ (she contracted the virus through breast-feeding). ACO-Africa provided her with food supplements, maize flour and soya porridge. I was so pleased to see this photo of her looking healthier & eating properly! She can also now say "mama" which is fab!
