Story
Loth Residents was set up in 2013 to oppose the application for 17 turbines up to 110m tip height on the hills between Helmsdale and Brora in East Sutherland. These turbines would dominate an outstanding landscape, being visible along the coast from Tain to north of Helmsdale, in Glen Loth, on Brora beach and in the Strath of Kildonan. The application goes to a Public Inquiry in April 2017.
In the 1990s a similar version of the proposal (involving much smaller turbines) was turned down, after a Public Inquiry, on landscape and public opinion grounds. That proposal was resurrected by Muirden Energy in 2014, but with turbines nearly twice the overall height of the previous application.
Following objections from the Highland Council, Scottish Natural Heritage, the Mountaineering Council of Scotland, the Scottish Wildlife Trust, as well as local Community Councils, organisations and individuals; the application is going to another Public Local Inquiry in April 2017.
As part of our fight, Loth Residents has instructed a leading landscape expert to give evidence on the impact of the proposals on our stunning natural landscape; in addition, we are sharing the cost of a QC with other objecting organisations.
The costs of this expert help will be significant. With your support, we have already received some generous donations from local residents, but we estimate that we need to raise a further £5,000. Challenging an application of this nature is a time consuming and expensive business, Loth Residents are volunteers who fit this in around their working day, all the money received by us from this campaign will go towards the costs of the Landscape Expert and QC.
We truly appreciate every bit of support, please donate, and help us to preserve this unique landscape which is enjoyed by so many.
