Story
On 20th June 2017 a dozen HomeServe employees intend to spend a ‘Night on the Streets’ in Birmingham to raise awareness of the plight of the homeless and raise funds to enable MLSS to extend their work even further to alleviate human suffering through free langar (food) and seva (voluntary donation and distribution).
Background
In December 2016 the Birmingham Evening Mail reported that research by the housing and homelessness charity Shelter had found that 16,100 people are homeless in the West Midlands, 9,560 of them in Birmingham. An inquiry by Birmingham City Council in January this year found that up to 55 people were sleeping rough on the city’s streets at night and that the number is growing rapidly – up 53% on the previous year and 6 times the figure in 2010. These figures are also thought to underestimate the true levels as they miss people sleeping in cars, sheds and derelict buildings.
Poverty is also increasing at an alarming rate. Statistics from Trussell Trust food banks show a total of 49,365 packs of emergency food supplies were given to people in crisis in the West Midlands during the period between April and September last year. On average there were 265 visits to food banks every day during
About Midland Langar Seva Society
MLSS volunteers help the homeless and provide food/ hunger relief to those that really need it. Langar is the term used in the Sikh religion or in Punjab for a general or common kitchen / canteen where food is served for free. MLSS ‘Sevadors’ go out into many city centres including Birmingham, every night and provide hot food for those most in need, regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, age or gender. More than 5,000 meals are served in a typical week.
NB. Some of the money raised will also go to Midland Freewheelers - another voluntary organisation and part of the Nationwide Association of Blood Bikes, set up to provide an out of hours and emergency rider service to NHS hospitals throughout the country.
