Weʼve raised £900 to Build a toilet block for 700 children in Mapalo Primary School, Malawi

Funded on Thursday, 6th April 2017

Don't have time to donate right now?

    Story

There are 700 children at Mapalo Primary School, in the Zomba district of Malawi.

Last month their toilet block was destroyed by heavy rains. Now the children have to go to the toilet in two small pits, barely covered with black plastic, because the community cannot afford to buy the building materials to build a new toilet block.

Imagine your child, your niece or nephew, or grandchild having to go to the toilet in a hole in the ground, or worse, out in the open.

I know the local councillor Imedi Issa Jafali. He works really hard for his area and has raised money for a nursery and other community facilities, but now he needs our help for this emergency.

Councils in Malawi don't have any spare money, and families need every penny to buy food and other essentials, so I want to help raise the money to buy the concrete, iron sheets and nails and timber for the build. The local community will do the rest.

All we need is £1 for every child at the school, so then children like 9 year-old Nafiza and her friends Willie (9) and Regina (8), who are in the cover picture with their headmaster Mr Kaliwo, will be able to get their dignity back!

I am going to Malawi in June and will visit the school, it would be amazing if I could show you pictures of the new toilet block being built.

Thanks, and I hope you can support the kids of Mapalo Primary School.

Thanks to everyone who helped raise the money needed to build the toilet blocks at Mapalo PS. Work has begun (check out my Facebook page for pictures) and I am going to see the blocks on 5 July. And thanks to your generosity we can build six separate units, which means privacy for the girls. Here are just some of the pupils of Mapalo PS, who all say a big thank you!

Good news, we are now at £820, with another big donation still to be announced, so let's get 4 toilet blocks. This appeal doesn't close for 24 days, so there's plenty of time to raise another £200 or so. Here is the management committee meeting who were elected yesterday, these are the village elders and parents who will oversee the project. They are sending me the budget after their meeting tomorrow, so I will share that with you too. Thanks again for your support x

WOW in less than a week we have exceeded our target, and there's another big donation on its way. This means the community can build 3 blocks, one for girls only, so important to young women. Pic is a meeting held 2 days ago to start planning. This afternoon there's a meeting to choose a committee to oversee the build. Parents, kids, teachers, village elders, and Cllr Jafali, the catalyst for this, all say a BIG thank you to everyone who helped. If you still want to help, please do so we could build 4 blocks - 700 kids is a lot!!!

Well done Susan (and all of Susan's friends) - hope this helps fund more girl friendly facilities. So important if we are to turn rhetoric into reality.
