Story
After setting up an appeal on Facebook & no leads, this brings me to the often very successful crowd funding.
On Wednesday 7th December at around 11am, Angela Cairns (who I call Mam & will be referred to that through the rest of this article) was in Thorntons in Eldon Square buying chocolates for Dora 'Dot' Cairns (Nanna; see previous). Nanna shouldn't really have these with her type 2 Diabetes but seeing as she is in year 9 of Vascular Dementia with a recent diagnosis of Breast Cancer we let her have the odd treat!
Mam made her way to the Card Factory on Northumberland Street to buy the last of her Christmas cards for the friends & family when she noticed her purse was gone.
In this purse was £65 of her own money & £125 of Nannas. (I know that doesn't add up to £200 but that's the minimum justgiving will let you raise).
There is approx a 250 yard distance from these shops but no sign of it.
My Mam is a carer for the elderly & my Nanna lives in an Old People's Home where her days consist of waking up, being hoisted in to her chair, sit there all day in front of her telly, being given 3 meals a day which she struggles to eat & wears a bib for to be hoisted back into her bed where the cycle starts again. Her pension & private pension just covers her care & whatever's left plus money given from a relative, Mam will buy Christmas presents.
This is why this is a particular hard situation for me not to try & fund for.
This money was all that there was. That's it. Not that Nanna understands. She doesn't even know what day it is. Or who indeed these women are anymore. But there's always a hope that when we give her her Christmas presents wrapped in festive paper & write out her Christmas cards, for a second she might remember. And we all like to pretend that the gifts we receive from her she picked & wrapped herself.
This money will help Mam & Nanna have the Christmas they had saved for & help us try to have Christmases like we used to.

8 years agoHere we are one week later & the local news have covered it! Again massively astounded by it all! I spoke with Balmoral Court (Nanna's home) & the remaining money will be going in the Residents fund to help pay for parties & entertainment for the Residents. I've been to some of the parties & the Residents love them so this will be great! Thanks again everyone! God bless & Merry Christmas x
