    Story

On January 4th 2016 our little boy Riley was born at Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham.

Riley surprised us all by arriving 6 weeks early and although he was a good weight for his age (6lbs 3oz) the doctors noticed that he was having a few problems with his breathing and would need to be transferred to intensive care.

We were a bit tired and shocked at the time and things got even worse when we were told that there were no free incubators for him at Nottingham and he would have to be taken in an ambulance to Rotherham.

As brand new parents it felt horrible to think that our tiny baby would have to journey so far on his first night.

After leaving the chaos of the QMC baby ward and arriving at Rotherham we quickly realised that this was a blessing in disguise. The team there were fantastic, so composed and professional, keeping Riley breathing properly when the morphine he had been given made him too sleepy to do it himself.

We stayed on the ward for two weeks. The team looked after us as a family in so many ways beyond the care and attention that they gave to our son. From teaching us to change nappies to making a special birthday card for Keira from Riley. Every single member of the team went above and beyond on a daily basis.

We really want to give something back to this wonderful unit in Rotherham, to help other premature babies like Riley and their parents. The ward has suggested that they would like to buy new breastfeeding chairs and so we'd love to raise as much money as possible to help with this.

We are arranging a balloon race to coincide with Riley's 1st birthday, with a cash prize for the balloon that travels the furthest.

We're asking for a minimum donation of £2.50 to be entered into the race. If you'd just like to donate then just let us know that you won't need a balloon entering.

Please leave your name so that we know who to contact if you're lucky enough to win.

    Thank you for your generosity,

    Greg, Keira & Riley

The first balloon has been found! Balloon #066 travelled just under 35 miles to Great Oxendon near Market Harborough. Still plenty of time for a balloon to be found in Australia though!

Tomorrow is the big day! Thank you to everyone who has donated, we've raised just over £1100 which is well over double our target and will make a huge difference to the ward at Rotherham. For those of you who have asked about coming to watch the release you are more than welcome to join us. We'll be releasing the balloons from West Park in Long Eaton at 1.15pm tomorrow. And, of course, if you'd still like to donate then it's not too late! Big thanks, Greg, Keira and Riley
