We are taking on the 4 Peaks / 4 Provinces / 3 Days Challenge on 19-21 May 2017. The 4 Peaks, the highest in each Province across Ireland are; Slieve Donard, Co Down; Lugnaquilla, Co Wicklow; Carrauntoohil, Co Kerry and Mweelrea, Co Mayo.

We started out as a small group of close friends with a common interest in Mountain Walking. What originally was a monthly social meet up for a climb turned into us vowing to complete the 4 Peaks Challenge. As we dived into this, we then thought we should use it as an opportunity to raise monies for a worthy cause.

We have chosen Autism and specifically ‘Run for Autism HAND’ who are a locally run charity raising funds for Autism in the Newry & Mourne and Armagh districts. It is solely committed to helping those living with Autism, and their families whilst also raising awareness and understanding so that society can become more understanding and tolerant.

Autism is a lifelong developmental disability and there is now over 300 children a year diagnosed with Autism in Northern Ireland alone.

This is a condition that cannot be cured. You see, hear and feel the world differently to others around you. Autism is a spectrum condition and one individual’s experience of it will be completely different from the next. Autistic people can have learning difficulties, disabilities, mental health issues meaning different levels of support are needed case by case, but with the right help and support, each person can be helped to live a more fulfilling life with those closest to them.
