    Weʼve raised £619 to send these donated children's storybooks to girls in Ghana.

    Funded on Saturday, 4th February 2017

    What is crowdfunding?

    Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered nonprofit.

    The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.

    Story

    Every child has the right to safe, formal, quality education and access to lifelong learning. However, unfortunately there are many barriers to female education and in Ghana, girls, especially those from rural communities, are often forced to leave school while many others never have the opportunity to go to school in the first place.

    Since returning from Ghana I have been collecting donations of children’s storybooks to send to the girls at Create Change. Following an article published in the local paper appealing for book donations, lots of local people, schools and charities have donated a huge number of really lovely children's storybooks and together we have filled 15 boxes full of books and stationary!

    Due to the unexpectedly large amount of book donations received I am now raising money to pay for the postage of the books to Ghana. I hope to ship the books in February so between now and then I will be doing lots of different book-themed activities to raise the funds, including;

    • A Competition! Guess how many donated books are in the picture and be in with the chance to win a £15 WHSmith voucher (courtesy of my mum) by donating as little as £1 and posting your answer in the comments box. Whoever guesses closest to the correct amount of books wins. The winner will be announced on 20th January. Goodluck!

    • The Tor Challenge! I will hike 40 miles from Peasedown to the top of Glastonbury Tor in January whilst carrying a ruck sake full of my old university textbooks. I prefer reading to exercise so this is definitely going to be tricky.

    • A Pub Quiz! A literacy themed quiz at a local pub (more details to come).

    Help give the girls and young women supported by Create Change books that will inspire them and help them to learn to read and write by donating whatever amount you feel you can give.

    Thank you for all the continued support.

      Update from the Page owner

      On Tuesday I set off on a 21 mile hike to the top of Glastonbury Tor carrying a rucksack of my old uni books. I set off at 8 in the morning; on the way I encountered rain, mud, blisters and many kind well wishers. I finally made it to the top of the Tor just before sun set. Thank you to everyone who sponsored me. Combined with the money raised online as well as cheques received and money put in the collection bucket we have reached the £750 target which means we can send all 15 boxes of books to the girls supported by Create Change in Ghana!

      Thank you to everyone who came down to the book themed quiz at the Apple Tree Inn, Shoscombe on Sunday. It was a brilliant, literature, fun filled night and combined with the donations raised from the 'guess how many books competition' we raised £214! Next week I will walk 21 miles from Peasedown to Glastonbury Tor carrying a rucksake of books and will also announce the winner of the guess how many books competition. So please keep guessing and giving so that we can send all 15 boxes of locally donated books to disadvantaged girls in Ghana.

      On Boxing Day I did a practice walk to Wells. When I first decided I would walk 20 miles to the top of Glastonbury Tor carrying a ruck sake full of old uni books I thought that I wouldn't prepare and would just wing it on the day. How hard can it be I thought, people walk miles everyday; a lot further than me and often in difficult circumstances, but...after speaking to people who have done similar challenges I concluded that winging it may not be the best plan. 3 weeks for the skin on my feet to grow back before I do the real deal!
