Story
The future of St Edmund's was uncertain until 2012 when the church was vested into the care of the Churches Conservation Trust, www.visitchurches.org.uk
We are a group of volunteers who, as the Friends of St Edmund's, look after this historic place on the Trust's behalf.
We hold a number of events throughout the year as well as regular open days & tours, and we want the whole community to
be able to enjoy this great building. But, unfortunately,
St Edmund's was built in an era when accessibility wasn't thought of by architect or church authorities.
The church is built high on a mound and has steep steps to all three entrances. This is an obstacle that we need to address in order for St Edmund's to be accessible to all.
At present we have regular visitors and supporters of events who are unable to gain entrance unaided, and that needs to change!
We often having to carry a wheelchair up steps and down again - as you will appreciate, not only is this totally unacceptable, it is undignified and unsafe.
We hope to address this problem by purchasing a Stair Climber. This will enable anyone who needs assistance to gain access to this building safely and in a more acceptable way.
The cost of this stair climber is in the region of £7000, so we need your help in achieving this goal. Any amount you
are able to spare will be gratefully received.
For St Edmund's to have a future as a historic venue of national importance, it needs to attract more events to the building. We have lost out on potential events because of access issues and this simply cannot continue.
Please help us achieve this goal by donating to our just giving page or by donating at the church. If you would like to know more about this project or about St Edmund's itself, please email us at:

Installing a stairclimber to allow wider access to the church sounds like a great initiative. (And St Edmund the Blessed, King of East Anglia, is a hero worth commemorating too!)
